below - Excerpt from the Quarter Horse
News, 1998. This was the year that Little Peppy moved into the
statistical lead as paternal grandsire of money earners,
(cutting) but consider, in order to do so he had to sire 2,309 foals
that were registered, relative to Doc O'Lena's 1,311. As I recall,
Little Peppy took the lead in both categories the following year, but
still, almost twice as many babies, probably [I speculate] reflected in
the total number of grandchildren - and these standings are based on
total dollars earned. Also, Little Peppy (Colonel Freckles, too) were
considered "the" cross for Doc Bar daughters, (generally
high quality mares) while Doc O'Lena plainly was not. So, it appears
likely that he (Doc O'Lena) was bred to lesser mares if viewed on
overall averages. These things make it seem probable that he was edged
out largely by sheer numbers, combined with a marginal disadvantage in
"mare power". Along with being dead, of course. (But, to be fair, that
would only factor into grandchildren's earning power in later years.)
